Can AI create a more efficient picking process?
PostNord TPL have previously collaborated with Binary Brains to optimize warehouse operations for Bauhaus. The collaboration is now being expanded to the 23,000 sqm warehouse that is home to Stadium Outlet.
Based on the AI forecasts integrated into the warehouse management system, models are built so that frequently picked items are placed in more accessible locations, thus streamlining the picking process. Item classification is optimized based on the physical conditions of the warehouse, and the model can even take into account that some deliveries that come in are not stored but go out directly to the store as cross-dock.
– We have a high fill rate and want to be extra careful about placing items where they belong; it's a challenge. Another thing is that we go in and out of seasons, where the weather has a big impact on what we pick most frequently. This creates inconsistency, which we hope the AI models can help us address, says Johanna Lager, Business Development Manager Region East at PostNord TPL.
But our goals go beyond increased efficiency. We also want to use innovative solutions to promote a good work environment, which affects staff efficiency, health, motivation and the overall organizational culture.
